The Material Culture Forum’s 87th Quarterly Meeting, “Consumerism & Consumption,” was held at the National Museum of the American Indian’s Rasmuson Theater on February 3rd, 2010.
Mary Augusta Thomas, Deputy Director of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, introduced the event. Nancy Pope, Curator of the History Division at the National Postal Museum, served as moderator.
Presentations and discussions included:
“Brian Jungen’s Washington,” by Paul Chaat Smith, Associate Curator of the National Museum of the American Indian.
“Commodities, Consumption and Their Effects: Perspectives from Papua New Guinea,” by Joshua Bell, Curator of Globalization in the National Museum of Natural History’s Department of Anthropology.
“Kindred Terms and Opposing Forces of American Foodways,” by Charley Camp, Associate Professor of Art History at Anne Arundel Community College/Maryland Institute College of Art.
The evening ended with a discussion led by Peter Reid, Director for Licensing of Smithsonian Enterprises, about future trends in consumerism of Smithsonian products and what buyers will look for in the coming years.
