Longevity: The Lifespan of Smithsonian Buildings

The Smithsonian Forum on Material Culture invited all Smithsonian staff and Forum members to attend its 94th meeting on Wednesday, May 1, 2013.  This Forum was the first of a three part series focusing on longevity of Smithsonian buildings, collections, and staff.

The event began with a tour of the Arts and Industries building, “Rebuilding History – the Past, Present, and Future of the Arts and Industries Building.”

Mary Augusta Thomas, Deputy Director of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, and Bill Tompkins, Director of the National Collections Program, introduced the evening with a warm welcome.

Presentations and Discussions included:

The Castle, by Richard Stamm, Curator of the Castle Collection at the Office of Architectural History and Historic Preservation.

The Patent Office, by Debra Nauta-Rodriguez, Acting Director at the Office of Planning and Project Management, Office of Facilities, Engineering and Operations.

The Carnegie Mansion, by Sharon Park, Associate Director at the Office of Architectural History and Historic Preservation.
